Abstract: 

Some tips on providing rich constructivist learning opportunities in SL while avoiding the pitfalls. Topics include course setup, handling risk elements in SL class exploration, role playing, events, and activities. Ethical issues include griefing, abuse, false identities, and lewd behavior encountered in SL regions. Copyright and legal issues include using copyrighted materials, transaction logs, object identities, chat logs and trademarked materials. Presentation will be done in Second Life.

One Approach to Online Training for Faculty: the iTeach Online - ANGEL Course

Abstract: 

Faculty new to teaching online or to an LMS benefit from professional development and institutional support structures. In response to that need, at Johnson County Community College we developed an online class, iTeach Online—ANGEL, to train faculty to use ANGEL, promote quality, and encourage a learner-engaged approach to online learning.

This presentation offers a tour of the iTeach course, which includes a "Getting Started" lesson modeling quality guidelines and orienting students to tools and skills required for the course. Materials in iTeach are organized by curriculum development steps, while lessons offer reading materials, tutorial movies, discussions, and assignments that demonstrate the flexibility and advanced settings of each tool.

Learn about how the KCREACHE consortium consisting of Johnson County Community College, Kansas City Kansas Community College, Metropolitan Community Colleges, Northwest Missouri State University, Park University, the University of Central Missouri and Washburn University collaborate to improve online courses using the Quality Matters guidelines and rubric.

Through the Quality Matters program, each of the institutions have representatives that can share training approaches, resources and peer to peer faculty reviewers and evaluators. We will share our vision for future expansion of this group and how other schools can be part of the growing trend in higher education.

How to Create an Online Foreign Language Course and Ensure Parity

We present results of a recent survey implemented by Johnson County Community College that included questions about online Foreign Language instruction. Next we explain how we created JCCC’s first online Foreign Language course. We describe evaluation of student outcomes and how we are using that information to ensure parity between online and traditional courses. Finally, we discuss our conclusions with respect to the development of future online courses.

Online courses serving international students present a number of distinct challenges. Instructors must address significant cultural differences, cope with the language barrier, and educate students about unfamiliar disciplinary standards. This presentation will demonstrate common technologies that are helpful in dealing with these challenges and discuss recent scholarship regarding other methods and tools that address the unique needs of the international online student. You can save time by mixing and matching lessons and create a document tailored to each unique situation. Campus-wide Podcasting: Simple and Cost Effective with Camtasia Relay

The presentation will focus on the recent purchase of Camtasia Relay (CR) by KU-Med Center and its use by faculty, staff, and students to easily record both audio and video podcasts from the classroom, lecture hall, or office. CR records your computer screen and audio with little or no additional classroom hardware. Your recording automatically uploads to the CR server where it is converted into one or more formats (i.e, mp3, wmv, etc.) and published to online destinations for immediate student viewing. In this presentation, the presenter will describe the selection, implementation, piloting, and rollout of CR at KU-Med Center, as well as some of the lessons-learned and future plans.
