Michael Rea
Professional Background:
I am the Project Manager in the Educational Technology Department at JCCC where I provide strategic, tactical planning and execution of instructional projects developed by the Ed Tech Center to improve instruction. I am also involved in providing primary support for faculty use of the college’s learning management system where training opportunities may be one-on-one, small group, self-paced, or workshop.
Experience with Education and Distance Learning:
I have provided analysis, design, development, training, support and research for the technology needs of faculty and staff at JCCC for over 5 years. I also participate on college task forces and committees dealing with the planning, design, development and implementation of programs related to instructional technology, training, and campus technology standards. I have also developed and instructed many sessions related to instructional technology and software that provides faculty with the additional tools to help students succeed.
Short message on what you bring to the C2C organization:
I have worked with C2C for the past 5 years in several capacities. During this time I have been involved in updating C2C websites, giving multiple presentations each year at SIDLIT and helped with the organization of SIDLIT. I will continue to improve on C2C’s mission to share technology expertise, resources, and training with a special emphasis on distance education and instructional technology in Kansas and Missouri by helping the membership to grow and implementing more web 2.0 applications to share information.
Jim Hillen
Professional Background:
I have been a Spanish instructor at Johnson County Community College for over 12 years. I received my graduate degree in Romance Languages from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and my undergraduate degree from Rockhurst University.
Experience with Education and Distance Learning:
With tremendous assistance from Johnson County Community College’s Educational Technology Center, I developed and taught JCCC’s first online language class. I have participated in the college’s pilot programs in podcasting, ANGEL, and Second Life, and have used these programs extensively in the classroom. Prior to the adoption of ANGEL, for years I had used Blackboard/Web CT in my face-to-face classes. Last year, I presented at the SIDLIT conference, and I will be presenting again this year. In addition, I currently serve on the college’s Distance Learning Committee.
Short message on what you bring to the C2C organization:
I bring with me a love of languages and of teaching, and a strong desire to utilize technology to improve instruction in all areas. My ability to work with others toward common goals will be an asset to the C2C organization.
Carine Ullom
Professional Background:
Carine Ullom has been in higher education for all of her professional career, which spans nearly 20 years. Most of that time has been spent in various aspects of instructional technology. She has worked in Academic Computing at the University of Kansas, providing end-user support and training; as Director of the Language Resource Center at St. Lawrence University, focusing on Computer Assisted Language Learning; and as Coordinator of Instructional Technology at Ottawa University, providing faculty development and support for the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Experience with Education and Distance Learning:
Since January of 2008, Carine has been Director of Academic Services for Ottawa Online, Ottawa University’s new distance education unit. In that capacity she has responsibility for online course development and course quality, orientation of new distance learners, and support for online instructors. Additionally, she coordinates the implementation of the technical infrastructure for the online teaching/learning environment, mentors new online instructors, and serves as an (online) instructor for Phase I of the Ottawa Online certification process for new online instructors.
Short message on what you bring to the C2C organization:
I have benefitted tremendously from C2C in the five years I’ve been attending conferences and SIDLIT. Access to quality professional development events at no cost is a wonderful (and amazing!) thing. In my current role at a small institution, I find it especially helpful to have multiple opportunities to interact with other professionals engaged in instructional technology and distance education in higher ed. And, finally, the C2C listserv is another terrific, no-cost resource that I have come to rely on. For all of these reasons, it would be my pleasure to have an opportunity to “give back” to an organization that has given me so much.
